On March 3, 1996, Cameron Jordan Johnson entered the world in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. He is the second-oldest of Gilbert and Amy Johnson’s four boys.

Before his growth surge as a high school sophomore, Johnson was a 6-foot-2-point guard. The Sacred Heart School of Our Lady, from which he matriculated. Johnson was a senior scorer, rebounder, and assister at OLSH, averaging 27.8 points, 8.0 boards, and 5.0 assists per game. He tallied 1,175 points by the end of his tenure. In April 2014, he inked a contract with the Penguins.

 

College Career

 

Pittsburgh (2014–2017)

Johnson was permitted to sit his first year at Pittsburgh after sustaining a shoulder injury early in the year and needing time to recover. He saw action off the bench during his first year as a reserve. Johnson scored 11.9 points per game as a redshirt sophomore for Pitt, making 41.5% of his three-point tries. Johnson completed his degree in marketing at the University of Pittsburgh in just three years. He transferred to North Carolina without having to repeat his senior year. The Panthers initially balked at releasing him to their rivals on the Tar Heels’ roster but ultimately gave in. He decided to leave because of the team’s failing record and the unpredictability of the management staff.

 

Carolina del Norte (2017–2019)

 

Five days after the season started for his squad on November 20, 2017, Johnson underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Johnson was ultimately suspended for ten contests. Despite the injury, Johnson still scored 12.4 points per game and pulled 4.7 boards per contest as a reserve sophomore. The 32-points Johnson tallied against Clemson were a personal best. Johnson had arthroscopic hip surgery at the end of the year and declared his plan to play his final year at North Carolina.

Johnson’s final year was his most productive season numerically. Johnson led the Tar Heels in scoring with 16.9 points per game, averaging 5.8 boards and 2.4 assists before his injury. Some pundits called Johnson “the best shooter in [the] draft” after a stellar senior season in which he shot 50.6% from the field and 45.7% from beyond the arc. In a 95-57 rout of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, Johnson scored 27 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. He also hit his first six three-point tries. Johnson scored 26 points in an 88-72 win over Duke, their archrival, in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils were rated first in the country at the time. Johnson scored 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from deep to lead the Tigers to a two-point win over Clemson in Littlejohn Coliseum. Johnson was honored with a spot on the All-ACC first team after the end of the regular season.

 

Professional career

 

Phoenix Suns (2019–2023)

 

The Phoenix Suns acquired Johnson and Dario ari from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for the sixth overall selection in the 2019 NBA draft, Jarrett Culver, on June 20, 2019. The Suns announced that they had hired Johnson the same day (July 6) that the deal was finalized. Johnson started his NBA in a 130-122 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on October 26, 2019. On 11/19, in a 120-116 defeat to the Sacramento Kings, he tallied a season-high 18 points. The next day, on December 5, Johnson scored a season-high 30 points in a 139-132 OT victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

On February 10, 2020, the club will make Johnson its starting point guard for the first time as they take on the Los Angeles Lakers. On his 24th birthday, March 3, 2020, Johnson set a new season best with 21 points in a 123-114 defeat to the Toronto Raptors, who were also the defending NBA champions. Johnson was sidelined for the remainder of March due to sickness, made his season debut on July 31, and led the team to a 125-112 victory over the Washington Wizards. Two days later, in a 117-115 win over the Dallas Mavericks, Johnson recorded his first double-double with 19 pts and a season-high 12 boards. On August 6, he tied his rookie season best with 12 rebounds and tallied 14 points in a 114-99 victory over the Indiana Pacers, recording his second double-double. Two days later, in a 119-112 win over the Miami Heat, Johnson became the fastest player in franchise history to make 100 three-pointers, surpassing the mark established by Wesley Person in 56 games. If Johnson were to play for the Suns on August 13, 2020, in the NBA Bubble, Phoenix would have a perfect 8-0 record, their longest winning run since March 2010.

 

In a 116-100 victory over the Sacramento Kings on December 27, 2020, Johnson scored 21 points off the bench, matching his then-career best. The 2021 NBA Finals featured Johnson and the Suns, but they fell in 6 games to the Milwaukee Bucks.

 

Johnson scored a career-high 38 points against the New York Knicks on March 4, 2022, including the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. After Tyler Herro and Kevin Love, he received the third-most votes for NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year.

 

Johnson will begin the 2022–23 season as the Suns’ starter power forward, thanks to head coach Monty Williams. Johnson had surgery to extract a piece of the cartilage in his right knee on November 8, 2022, effectively ending his season for at least the next two months.

The Suns sent Johnson, Mikal Bridges, and Jae Crowder to the Brooklyn Nets on February 9, 2023. They also sent four unprotected first-round choices and a transfer for a first-round pick in 2028. A.
