Who owns the LA Lakers?

A collection of business moguls jointly owns the Los Angeles Lakers, with ownership interests split among several people and trusts.

Buss Family Trusts

Legendary former Lakers owner Jerry Buss was still a 66% controlling shareholder when he passed away in 2014. Jerry divided the team ownership equally among his six children at the time of his passing (11% each). Currently, his daughter Jeanie serves as the team governor and attends NBA board meetings on his behalf.

 Philip Anschutz

Philip Anschutz was one of the team’s key backers, despite no longer having an investment in it. In addition to energy, railroads, real estate, sports, newspapers, movies, theaters, arenas, and music, the billionaire owns or controls businesses in various industries. It was revealed in July 2021 that AEG, the world’s most prominent sports ownership firm, had acquired Anschutz’s 27% ownership stake in the business. Todd Boehly, owner of Chelsea Football Club, and Dodgers executive Mark Walter received minority ownership.

Edward P. Roski

Roski is the president and chairman of the board of Majestic Realty Co., in addition to being a co-owner of the Lakers. He was ranked #115 on the Forbes 400 in 2021 and had real estate holdings totaling more than 83 million square feet in the United States.

Patrick Soon-Shiong

Patrick Soon-Shiong is well-known for much more than just being a billionaire and owning a number of well-known companies, including the Lakers. He is also a highly regarded transplant surgeon and the creator of the medicine Abraxane, which rose to prominence for treating pancreatic, breast, and lung cancer. In addition to owning the Los Angeles Times, he acquired a 4.5% share in the basketball franchise from NBA great Magic Johnson.

Who is Jeanie Buss, president of the LA Lakers?

Jeanie Buss is the daughter of the previous owner Jerry Buss. Following her father’s passing in 2014, she was elected to represent the Lakers on the NBA board of governors. Despite numerous losses since she assumed leadership, including only one NBA Championship victory in 2020, Jeanie is undoubtedly the organization’s top dog.
