Dwight Howard’s Overseas Recruitment: Targeting James Harden for Taiwanese Team

Dwight Howard, the three-time Los Angeles Lakers center and 2020 NBA champion, is again making waves overseas as he continues his basketball journey beyond the NBA. With his recent move to the Taiwanese club Taoyuan Leopards, Howard has become known for his light-hearted attempts at recruiting NBA stars to join him, even while recognizing their ongoing opportunities in the United States.

His latest target? James Harden, the 2018 MVP and former teammate during their Houston Rockets days from 2013 to 2016. Although their collaboration led them to the 2015 Western Conference Finals, their relationship soured after a disappointing first-round exit in 2016, leading to Howard’s subsequent trade to the Atlanta Hawks.

Since then, Harden’s career path has taken several turns, with trade demands from the Houston Rockets in 2020, a stint with the Brooklyn Nets in 2022, and now finding himself with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2023. Notably, during a recent Adidas sportswear event in China, Harden publicly criticized Sixers’ team president Daryl Morey, who had brought both Harden and Howard to Houston during his tenure there.

Despite Harden’s uncertain situation, Howard playfully extended an offer to his former teammate via Instagram: “Aye James, I’m about to buy a team, you can be the franchise player and a partner ??️ forget 84 you went score 100 ?. Come on; you’re already in Asia. Just stay there; it’s a shorter flight to Taiwan ?.”

While it’s clear that Harden can dominate in leagues with less competitive play, his recent NBA statistics remain impressive, averaging 21 points, 10.7 assists, and 6.1 rebounds across 58 regular season games last year. Howard’s recruitment effort showcases his playful side, yet it also underscores the recognition of Harden’s enduring value on the NBA stage.

As Howard continues to thrive in his international basketball pursuits, his ongoing interactions with former NBA colleagues like Harden add an intriguing dimension to his post-NBA journey.
