Wenyen Gabriel’s Personal Life

Gabriel was born in Khartoum, Sudan, on March 26, 1997. Gabriel was given the name “Wenyen” because his sister died in infancy a year before, which means “wash your tears” in his native Dinka language.

Two weeks after Gabriel’s birth, his mother, Rebecca Gak, relocated him and his three siblings to Cairo, Egypt, to escape the brutality of the Second Sudanese Civil War. Gabriel’s seven-year-old brother, Komot, took over as primary caregiver while his mother struggled to raise enough money to relocate his father, Makuac, to Cairo.

Gabriel is in South Sudan as part of the UNHCR program.

Two years after they landed in Egypt, the United Nations authorized a request to move the refugee family to Manchester, New Hampshire, an American city with a big South Sudanese population.
