Deandre Edoneille Chidike Ayton, better known by his NBA nickname Deandre Ayton, was born in The Bahamas. He is a professional basketball player for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns.

At 12, Ayton moved to the United States to participate in high school basketball. No one probably imagined the young boy from the Bahamas would become the NBA superstar he is today.

He entered the 2018 NBA draft and has been a regular for the Phoenix Suns ever since. However, he is the team’s primary central player.

In a similar vein, he has already demonstrated his worth on defense.

Deandre Ayton’s leadership led him to the NBA Finals in 2021 for the first time since 1993. During that same postseason, he was also recognized as a top center in the league.

The Suns center’s contract status is a perennial topic of discussion in the media as the NBA season kicks off.

The athlete, however, seems committed to winning an NBA title with the Suns.

Early Life, Family & Education

Deandre Ayton was born on July 23, 1998, in Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas, to parents Edward Egerue and Andrea Ayton. His mom, Andrea, comes from Bahamian and Jamaican stock. Also, his father was a Nigerian Igbo. Thus, he carries that heritage with him.

His time in the Bahamas was challenging. His mother struggled to provide for her three sons. He and his mother also had strained ties with his father.

He attended Bahamas Academy High School for his early education. He was fascinated by the older boys’ basketball games when he was a kid. He eventually developed a passion for the game and picked it up to play in a church league.

He was discovered by a basketball game promotion organization in the Bahamas while he was still in school, and he immediately began playing professionally in the Bahamas.

Some years later, he attended a basketball camp where the instructors took notice of his skills. Then, at the coaches’ advice, Deandre’s family shipped him off to Balboa City School in San Diego.

His parents divorced not long after he was born, and his mom went on to marry his stepfather, Alvin Ayton. After a while, he uprooted to Arizona with his new family and enrolled at Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix.

Deandre Ayton | Career

High School Career

Deandre was a member of the Balboa School football team in San Diego for two years. The 6’11” player led Balboa to a 17-14 record as a sophomore, thanks to his averages of 21 points, 16 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game.

Ayton spent his senior and junior years at Arizona’s Hillcrest Prep: his Prep School teammate, NBA star, and current Sacramento Kings Marvin Bagley III member.

He had career highs in points (29.2), rebounds (16.7), and blocks (3.8) in the 2015-16 season.

The following year, Ayton showed off his school’s finest results of his high school career. To top it all off, Ayton led his squad to a Grind Session World Championship and was named both the Finals MVP and the season’s MVP.

In 2016, while playing for the World Select Team at the Nike Hoop Summit, he recorded 8 points and seven rebounds.

Ayton finished his high school career as the best center in his graduating class of 2017. He committed to the Arizona Wildcats at the end of 2016 and will be a freshman there in the fall.

College Career

His college career was only a year-long, yet he set numerous power-forward records then. In his first game, a 101-67 victory over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, he scored 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked three shots.

Ayton was involved in a scandal involving then-head coach Sean Miller during his exciting freshman season.

According to an FBI source, former Arizona assistant Emmanuel Richardson allegedly told a former Adidas consultant that Sean Miller was paying Ayton. Through wiretapping, they were able to make this discovery.

On the other hand, Ayton won a slew of honors for his stellar play this season.

After Arizona was eliminated in the round of 64 of the 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, he stopped his college career without playing the final three seasons.

Professional Career

With the first choice of the 2018 NBA draft, the Phoenix Suns selected Ayton. Ayton scored 10 points in his Summer League debut and grabbed eight boards against the Dallas Mavericks.

Ayton had two double-doubles in his rookie NBA season, the first coming against the Dallas Mavericks when he scored 18 points and grabbed ten rebounds in a win and the second coming against the Golden State Warriors five days later.

Even though his team lost the game against the Toronto Raptors, he still managed to score 17 points and grab 18 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

In his first year in the NBA, Deandre set some records, including the rookie record for most double-doubles (held by Alvan Adam).

While Ayton had a great year with the Suns in his second NBA season, he was suspended for 25 games for violating the league’s anti-drug policy. In the same season, he injured his ankle but quickly returned to the court.

Ayton’s 2020-21 season was exceptional, even though he missed only roughly three games owing to Covid-19 regulations.

Furthermore, he guided the Suns to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1993.

Despite speculation that he would leave the Suns before the 2021-22 season, he is still with the team.
