Who will host the 2022 football World Cup?
The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.
A total of 32 teams, including host Qatar, have qualified for the tournament, which will be the first time the biggest event in football history will be played in the Middle East.
Former champion Brazil has qualified for the World Cup 21 times, the most of any major tournament participant this year. Meanwhile, Qatar will make its World Cup debut, automatically qualifying as host.
The 32 qualified teams have been placed in eight groups of four, with the top two sides from each group qualifying for the knockout rounds.
The first game will be played on November 21, and the final will be played on December 18 – Qatar National Day – at the Lusail Stadium.
After a group stage of four matches a day, the knockout stages will include the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the World Cup final on December 18.
The matches will take place across eight stadiums in Qatar. Khalifa Stadium, Qatar’s national stadium, is the only pre-existing stadium to be chosen to host matches.
The other seven stadiums were built specifically for games.
With the exception of the Lusail Stadium, all stadiums have been completed and have hosted competitive games. The Lusail Stadium, with a capacity of 80,000 people, is the largest.
