Ivica Zubac Early Life, Family, and Education

Born and raised on March 18, 1997, in Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Ivica Zubac is the eldest child of Ivan Zubac and Dijana Zubac. Growing up in Citluk near the Croatian border, Zubac attended a private school in his hometown. Raised in a sports-oriented family, with his father being an amateur basketball player and his cousin Zoran Planinic playing in the NBA, Ivica developed an early passion for basketball.

Zubac began playing basketball for fun at 5, inspired by his father and cousin. Despite initial challenges and feelings of inadequacy, his growth spurt rekindled his confidence, leading him back to the court. Under the guidance of coach Ivo Bundic, he rapidly progressed, setting the foundation for his future basketball career. His younger brothers, Antonio and Mario, also share his passion for basketball, with Antonio playing as a power forward.

Professional Career

Europe (2013–2016)

Zubac’s journey began in the youth system of Cibona, progressing through the ranks before joining Zrinjevac in the 2nd Croatian division during the 2013–14 season. His talent and dedication led him to make Cibona’s men’s team roster in the subsequent season. Playing in Croatia’s top-tier A-1 League and the ABA League, Zubac quickly gained recognition as a promising prospect. Despite facing financial challenges, he moved to Mega Leks of Serbia in February 2016.

Los Angeles Lakers (2016–2019)

The turning point in Zubac’s career came on 23 June 2016, when the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the 32nd overall pick in the NBA draft. Making his debut on 2 November 2016, Zubac displayed his skills by contributing six points as a starter. Throughout his time with the Lakers, he showcased his potential, achieving notable performances, including his first double-double on 17 January 2017 and a career-best 25 points the following month. Unfortunately, a high ankle sprain in March 2017 cut short his rookie season.

The 2017–18 season saw Zubac spending time with the South Bay Lakers in the NBA G League, emphasizing his determination to develop as a player.

Los Angeles Clippers (2019–present)

Zubac’s journey took a new turn on 7 February 2019, as he and Michael Beasley were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Emerging as a critical player for the Clippers, Zubac played a pivotal role in helping the team secure a playoff spot for the first time in his career. Notable highlights include a season-high 15 rebounds in February 2020 and a historical performance in August 2020, where he became the first player in the shot clock era to achieve 20-something points and 15-something rebounds on 100% shooting in under 30 minutes of play.

Zubac made significant contributions during the 2021-22 NBA season, starting a career-high 76 games and averaging career-highs of 10.3 pts and 8.5 rebs per game. His outstanding performance earned him a well-deserved three-year, $33 million contract extension with the Clippers in June 2022.

On 27 November, Zubac further solidified his impact, putting up an impressive 31 points and a career-high 29 rebounds in a thrilling 114–110 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

National Team Career

Zubac has also left his mark on the international stage, representing the Croatian junior national team during the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. His notable achievements include 17.6 points and 7.9 rebounds in the 2015 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, earning him All-World Under-19 Second Team honors. Zubac continued to shine in subsequent tournaments, showcasing his double-digit scoring and rebounding capabilities in the 2015 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, earning a spot on the all-tournament second team.
