His sophomore season was spectacular, as he earned the Region 1-4A Player of the Year title. Averaging an impressive 26.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and three assists per game, he led his team to a Class 4A Upper State runner-up finish.

In his junior year, McGowens etched his name in the school’s history books by scoring a phenomenal 65 points in a second-round win at the Class 4A playoffs. With an average of 25.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, he once again secured the Region 1-4A Player of the Year title and propelled his team to the Class 4A Upper State championship game. Demonstrating his versatility, McGowens decided to spend his senior season at Legacy Early College in Greenville, South Carolina. Despite the change, he continued to impress, scoring 21.6 pts, 4.7 rebs, and 3.1 assists per match and earning the prestigious South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year honors.
