It’s no surprise after the two combined for 0-of-7 hitting in the Labor Day opener, including six strikeouts. Yankees manager Aaron Boone is desperate to get anything going at this point with the team sitting at 3-7 in their last 10 games.
It’s still going to be an uphill battle against a tough rotation with the Yankees clearly struggling to put the right pieces together. Is this just a one-game deal, or would Boone consider benching Gallo and Torres longer than one game?
It would have been easy enough to credit the Blue Jays’ recent three-game sweep to the Oakland Athletics’ sudden freefall. But then they went to Yankee Stadium and blasted their big brother New York Yankees in an 8-0 shutout victory. And then they clobbered them again on Tuesday with a two-homer performance from Alejandro Kirk.
The Blue Jays certainly deserve some credit for stepping up defensively, but this is more about the Yankees completely imploding at the plate at the most inopportune time. They are slashing .158/.245/.253 in their last three games. I’m taking the Blue Jays to stun the Yankees for a third straight time.
