Who is the youngest player in the nba to win a championship
The 2020-21 NBA season saw the Milwaukee Bucks secure an unlikely title. Several key injuries suffered by a number of top stars during the playoffs were the main reason for this. In addition to LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers, the Brooklyn Nets also pulled out after injuries disrupted their campaigns. Still, the Bucks ended up with the title.
While the Milwaukee Bucks won their first championship in 51 years, the losing finalist Phoenix Suns are looking for their first-ever NBA championship. Regardless, the odds of an NBA championship have gotten less and less likely over the years, and the league has even seen an NBA player win a title before his 20th birthday. In this article, we take a look at the youngest NBA champion in league history.
The youngest NBA champion of all time: Darko Milicic
The two 20-year-olds have won NBA championships to date in the form of legend Magic Johnson and Miami Heat’s Dorell Wright, who won the league as a 20-year-old in 2005-06. Wright did not appear in a single NBA playoff game and started a total of two NBA games during the regular season. He played in 48 games in total and was part of a star-studded lineup alongside Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal.
Regardless, former Detroit Pistons center Darko Milicic holds the record for being the youngest NBA champion at 18 years and 361 days. The Serbia international was selected with the second overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft and is considered a promising future in the NBA.
Fortunately, although Milicic only played 34 games and didn’t start his rookie season, he ended up picking up the Larry O’Brien trophy. The Pistons have Ben Wallace and Richard Hamilton, two All-Star-caliber scorers who played well against the Los Angeles Lakers. Milicic averaged less than 2-3 minutes per game in several playoff games and finished the season with 1.4 points and 1.3 rebounds.
