Early Life and High School Career

Denyse and Tyrone Maxey gave birth to Maxey on November 4, 2000, in Dallas, Texas. Before becoming a coach, his father was a college player for the Washington State Cougars under head coach Kelvin Sampson. Dwyane Wade was Maxey’s favorite childhood basketball player. When he informed his father that he wanted to be like Wade, Tyrone devised a training regimen for his son based on his video analysis of NBA players Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry. Maxey and his Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) squad won a national title in sixth grade. He previously broke his pinky finger during an AAU city championship in Garland, Texas, but he only finished the game by dribbling with his non-injured hand.

Maxey played shooting guard for the Colonel’s basketball team at South Garland High School. He scored 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game in his sophomore. Maxey averaged 22.5 pts, seven rebs, 3.1 assists, and 2.3 steals per game the next season, and South Garland advanced to the Texas state basketball tournament for the first time. He averaged 46 points in the state championship semifinals, but the team lost overtime to Obra D. Tompkins High School. He considered dropping out of high school after the 2018 season to enter the NBA sooner but finally elected to continue his four-year South Garland career in the hopes of turning a McDonald’s All-American.

He finished high school as a senior, averaging 21.8 points, 6.3 rebs, and 3.6 assists per game. He was named First-Team All-Area, a McDonald’s All-American, and Texas Mr. Basketball, in addition to graduating at the top of his class. South Garland advanced to the 2019 Texas 6A Region II tournament finals, where they were defeated 64-53 by Klein Forest High School despite Maxey’s 25 points.

College Career

For Kentucky’s Champions Classic victory over the Michigan State Spartans, Maxey played in his first college game. Maxey scored 26 points in his first game as a freshman, a school record for a freshman debut, as the Wildcats won 69-62 the day after he turned 19 years old. Maxey won the Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Week award from the United States Basketball Writers Association, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week, and the NCAA Division I National Player of the Week awards.

Maxey scored 17 points as Kentucky defeated the Auburn Tigers 73-66 on February 29, 2020, to clinch the SEC regular season title. Maxey was entitled to the SEC All-Freshman Team and the All-SEC Second Team at the end of the season. After the COVID-19 break, on April 6, 2020, Maxey declared for the 2020 NBA Draft.

Professional career

Philadelphia 76ers (2020–present)

Maxey, initially projected to go in the lottery, was still available late in the first round of the 2020 NBA draught. Instead, one of Daryl Morey’s first actions as the team’s president of basketball operations was to choose him by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 21st overall pick. On December 3, 2020, Maxey agreed to a rookie scale contract with the team. On December 23, the season’s first game, he made his NBA debut against the Washington Wizards for the Philadelphia 76ers, tallying six points on a 3-for-6 shooting clip, two assists, and two rebounds in eleven minutes.

Maxey allowed the 2021 offseason in the NBA Summer League to further his growth after the 76ers were eliminated from the playoffs. In the 1st game of the NBA playoffs 2022, the Philadelphia 76ers played the Toronto Raptors. Maxey had a breakthrough game in game one of the series, leading Philadelphia to a 131-111 victory with a postseason career-high 38 points. As a result, he made postseason history by being the youngest player from Philadelphia to score 30 or more points. With a score of 20.2 points per game, 45.6 percent shooting, and 34.4 % three-point shooting throughout the series, Maxey was the 76ers’ top scorer.

In a 112-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors on October 28, 2022, Maxey scored a career-high 44 points on 15 of 20 field goal attempts, including nine of his 12 three-point tries.

National Career

Maxey was selected to play for the American men’s national under-19 basketball team during his time in high school for the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship in Canada. In his comeback game against Canada for the gold medal, Maxey earned two points in 12 minutes of action. To win the gold medal, the United States defeated Canada 113-74.

Personal Life

Maxey has three sisters and is one of four kids. Their father, Tyrone, who lives in Voorhees Township, New Jersey, during the NBA season, served as the player development director for Southern Methodist University during the 2017–18 college basketball season. On 2021 Christmas Eve, when his family was in town for a holiday, his Voorhees home caught fire. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the 76ers gave Maxey and his family housing and other assistance.
