Paul Reed is an NBA center/power forwards who is 2.06 meters tall and plays for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Being the backup for this season’s MVP front-runner Joel Embiid has always been a challenging position for Reed on the team’s roster.

But following the All-Star weekend, Feb. 17–19, 2023, he began to play more frequently, greatly aiding his development.

Reed played nine minutes per game and averaged three points before the All-Star break. These figures have increased recently.

On average, he has been playing about 12 minutes per game over the last couple of games, scoring 5 points and pulling down four rebounds.

Early Life, Family & Education

The 23-year-old center for the 76ers, Paul Reed, also known as BBall Paul, was born in Orlando, Florida, on June 14, 1999. He attended Wekiva High School in Apopka, Florida.

He is the son of Paul Reed Sr. and Michelle Reed, who both played basketball at Old Dominion and UCF before moving to Europe to play professionally.

With his four sisters, Hazel, Danielle, Chantel, and Janelle, Reed shared a childhood. Reed’s childhood was difficult because he was born into a vast family and raised in an African-American home.

Nevertheless, Reed finished high school in 2016, averaging 18.2 points and 11.4 rebounds as a senior, surpassing all the odds against him.

Many colleges, including Kansas State, Murray State, and Clemson, were interested in him and offered scholarships due to his remarkable high school basketball performance.

Nevertheless, Reed opted for DePaul over other schools, and in 28 games as a true freshman, while sitting on the bench, he averaged 3.6 points.

In the almost last part of the season, he played more.

He gave up his last season of eligibility and entered the 2020 NBA Draught as a junior after experiencing many ups and downs and injury issues.

Career

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Paul Reed with the 58th overall pick in the 2nd round of the 2020 NBA Draft.

He joined the group in December of that year and agreed to a two-way contract. In a 118-101 victory over the Hornets on January 4, 2021, Reed made his NBA debut by playing the final 90 seconds of the contest.

He played the truncated single-site G-League season in 2021, winning MVP and Rookie of the Year Awards, because his contract obliged him to divide time between the 76ers and their G-League club, Delaware Blue Coats.

However, Philadelphia said on March 26 that Reed’s two-way contract had been changed to a typical NBA contract.

Due to his limited playing time this season, Reed did not have the opportunity to establish himself, but following the All-Star weekend, his playing time and score average increased.

Because Joel Embiid missed games at the start of the season due to injuries, Reed had a chance to show off his abilities.
