Early Years

Marcus and Lenoir McClung are the parents of McClung. His umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck during birth; his father said, “He was blue as a Smurf.” The attending doctors promptly untied him, and he nearly immediately healed.

McClung’s parents’ upbringing helped him in his athletic endeavors, according to articles published in The Washington Post and The Undefeated in 2018 and both publications. He spent a massive portion of his youth under the guidance of his father, and the family was able to pay for and support him to join an AAU travel team in Richmond.

His sister Anna played soccer at Florida State and Tennessee, finishing high school as the VHSL’s all-time leading scorer. His uncle Seth played baseball for two Major League Baseball (MLB) clubs. Correne and Collette, his aunts, participated in Division I college hockey, and Correne also represented Canada internationally.

Rapper Riff Raff from Houston first asserted that he is Mac McClung’s cousin since his mother is the sister of Mac McClung’s mother. However, Mac McClung has since contradicted this in an interview.

High School Career

When McClung was a sophomore playing varsity basketball at Gate City High School, he began dunking. Throughout the remaining days of his high school career, he gained recognition as an acrobatic dunker. As a junior, on February 24, 2017, he averaged a career-high 64 points in a loss against Dan River High School at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Region 2A West championship. In the summer, he decided to play for Rutgers in college. MaxPreps called him “one of the nation’s most exciting players.”

He helped Gate City capture its first state championship in his last and final year of high school by scoring 47 points against Robert E. Lee High in Staunton in the finals game. McClung was once again awarded South-west Virginia Player of the Year by the Herald Courier after finishing the season with 1,153 points and 2,801 for his career, both records in the VHSL for all classes. He triumphed in the Ballislife All-American Game slam dunk competition.
